Unfortunately, that hotel ( I assume it is the one on State Rd.84) is in an area that has no really good restaurant choices- they have some sort of restaurant in the motel, but it is not very good at all. The closest one I can think of is the Old Heidelberg, a German/Continental restaurant a little more east on Rt. 84 that is really pretty good if you like that cuisine. I believe there is a strip mall across the street from that that probably has some sort of store for sodas etc. but it%26#39;s a rather dicey neighborhood. All in all it%26#39;s a rather deserted downscale area, so you may want to start your vacation off well by taking a taxi to either SW 17th Street or a little further north to Las Olas Blvd. On 17th Street you could dine at Bimini Boatyard or Bravo Italian Restaurant ,among others or , more casual at Southport Raw Bar or the Quarterdeck-and there are some grocery and drug stores fairly close by.

I loved Rome, although we didn%26#39;t cruise there- have a lovely time and eat lots of gelato!

If you are on the SR 84 location, there are plenty of places to buy a soda and such - there is a Winn Dixie in the strip mall the other poster is talking about. Sure, at 10 PM, I might not venture over there by myself, but there is no problem whatsoever in the day. That same strip mall has a Wendy%26#39;s and a Dunkin Donuts, too. Also a Chinese takeout. If you are running short on time, you can try Li%26#39;l Reds Barbeque. I%26#39;ve only had breakfasts there (good!) and I know people that love their barbeque. There is also Lester%26#39;s Diner, a FtL tradition, down the road too for pretty good diner food. If you have time, however, try to eat at Anthony%26#39;s Runway 84 (Italian). It%26#39;s another legend in Ft. L., but you may want to secure a reservation ahead of time - they are notoriously hard to get into. You could head over to US 1 and not far is Anthony%26#39;s Coal Fire Pizza - fantastic pizzas and wings. Also, Ernie%26#39;s Barbeque is good food and a fun casual ambiance. On a nice night go up to the rooftop dining/bar area.

Good luck, and next time stay longer. :-)

As a postscript - the area around the strip mall isn%26#39;t dicey at all, in fact they are putting up 700+k houses all around the area. It is adjacent to River Oaks, which is a very nice neighborhood. The problem with the strip mall is not the area, it is the actual mall tenants (Winn Dixie, Payless, etc.) that tend to attract lower socioeconomic folks.

I would agree that it isn%26#39;t a ';hot spot'; for dining though. I am comfortable with the places I have recommended.

Again, have fun on your cruise.
