Where can we find wonderful vegetarian dishes (other than pastas) and still satisfy fish and meat eaters in Key West? Scrumptious dining is one of our luxuries but balancing great vegetarian and meat/fish options sometimes gets tricky. Lunch and dinner options?...Mangoes, TheCafe, 7 Fish, Louie%26#39;s Backyard, Coco Palms, Michaels, Blue heaven, Pisces????? These are all places I have picked up from reading these posts but don%26#39;t know about the vegetarian side...
Vegetarian and fish/meat eatersBlue Heaven has at least one dish that could be ordered as a large appitizer or a main meal - it is simply called the vegetarian platter and has an assortment of both ';regular'; and island vegatables. Their menu also has a great selection of seafood and I have heard the lobster is very good.
If you go to El Meson de Pepe on Wall Street, they have a number of vegetable appitizers. If you order a couple of these it will be satisfying. The steamed yucca is very good, as are the plaintains - served ';wet.'; And here, too, they have Cuban style meats and fish platters. One of these years I am goind to splurge for the paella-for-two, $49.00, but it looks great.
And Santiago%26#39;s Bodega, about three blocks off Duval on Petronia, just past Chapman Lane. Their specialty is tapas and you can order vegetable or meat or fish and just share around. They have a humus dish that is very good - three types of humus, pita bread, and calamat olives. Order this with a pitcher of white Sangria (They have changed hands since I was last there, but if they are as good as before, highly recommended)
All of their menus are on-line.

Vegetarian and fish/meat eatersBlue Heaven has an awesome tofu stir fry. The Cafe is mostly vegetarian and has an awesome menu. Salute has wonderful salads. Those are the places off the top of my head. We focus so much on seafood around here that creative vegetarian eating can be a challenge, but it%26#39;s out there. Most places have menus easily accessible outside, so you can review your options before going in. I would suspect that places like Alice%26#39;s and Sarabeth%26#39;s have good veggie dishes.
PJK and Island Kitty
Thanks. I%26#39;ll check these places on the web.
Also check out Monsoon Cafe. Not posh and is basically take out. They do have some outside tables and makes for a nice low key meal. They have many veg options to include tofu. They also won the best crabcake contest a few weeks back.
All the other suggestions are great as well.
Also check out SaraBeth%26#39;s on Simonton St. Not strictly vegetarian, but there are many meatless selections, along with fish, and they use wonderful, fresh ingredients for everything.
Cafe Sole also has vegetarian selections and a great menu.
You have all been helpful. I checked out some menus and it looks like we will be able to satisfy everyone with the suggestions given!
wakkoqueen - thanks for the post. We%26#39;re going down for our honeymoon, and I%26#39;m vegetarian and husband is from Texas = meat eater. I was wondering the same thing.
Check out www.keywest.com/themenu There are quite a few different menus, to give you an idea of what is served there. When are you going to Key West? You%26#39;ll have to let me know what you found.
THE CAFE! The CAFE! Definitely. Go more than once. Fresh and wonderful and delicious tuna for meat eaters. (inside seating)
El Meson de Pepe - wonderful patio seating with Cuban selections for vegetarians too/ salsa music/dancing at Mallory Sq.
Alices (Duval Street) was fabulous although pricey (inside seating)
Banana Cafe for breakfast/brunch of yogurt and fruit and baguettes - porchside or inside.
Mangoes - central Duval Street locale and place to watch people go by. Good food but try the above first.
DO NOT EAT the $2.99 all you can eat breakfast at the Center Court mall area. Did not think anyone could ruin pancakes and French toast but they did a great job of it. Thought we would save some money after all the pricey places we went but go to BANANA CAFE instead..just down the street.
