Live from Sanibel! :)

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to post a beach report....after spending our first 3 days here on Sanibel...

Red Tide Report: In Saturday we noticed a couple dead fish on the beach at the lighthouse and there was a bad fishy (not normal) smell in the air, but after the heavy rainon Saturday and part of Sunday it has gone away. We are stying at Tarpon Beach (a very nice quiet condo complex, but right next to noisy, family-oriented Pointe Santo, LOL) and noticed no signs of Red Tide or red algae and no fishy odor (and no dead fish). Water was a little cloudy but otherwise great for shelling, sunbathing and walking.

Tree Planting on Periwinkle: Hmmmm, we havent seen any signs of that at all,LOL.

Marco Island: Went there for the day today...Lovely as always, but it sure was crowded, even with the threat of a thunderstorm most of the day. I like the non-crowded beaches of Sanibel, but there seemed to be a lot more shells on Marco and the water was definitely clearer on Marco. Even saw my first manatee about 10 yards from shore on Marco! What a treat.

Weather: weather seems to be generally hot and humid of course, but rain most of the last couple nights. Not too bad though. Good to wash the red tide away! Saw a great rainbow tonight over the beach. I%26#39;ll try to post pix when we get home.

Tapon Beach condos: A very nice and quiet 3-building complex with pool and tennis courts. It is right next to Pointe Santo, so you ';share'; the beach with all of their guests. A little noisier than I would have liked, but we just set up camp farther north, LOL.

That%26#39;s all for now! Take care!

Try the beach at Blind Pass - but go early and park on the Captiva side or try Bowman%26#39;s Beach - not quite as far a Blind Pass. The water will be clearer - but there%26#39;s a lot of sand in Sanibel water.

Next time, try staying further down West Gulf - or do what I do and stay up on Captiva! ;-) Have a great one.

Thanks for that update--we are going to Sanibel next Wednesday. Keep the reports coming !

Hope to hear another report from you today.

I had held a condo at Sanibels Arms West and they just called me to see if I still wanted it (I let it go as we are staying at Ocean%26#39;s Reach now) and I asked about red tide. She said that there has been some dead fish in front of the condos and a visitor told her he was fishing and saw a lot more. I sure hope this is gone QUICK!

Ft. Myers Beach is clear of algae and no red tide

I did check all sources I could find and nothing about fish kills on Sanibel, but they could wash in with the tides if there%26#39;s one off shore. The only thing I found was bad conditions around Clam Pass and off and on issues south toward Naples and Vanderbuilt Beach. Last k. brevis readings were done July 7 so we should see an update tomorrow.

Definitely keeping my fingers crossed !!
