Shall we stay at La Concha?

Hey everyone -- have been reading reviews and getting nervous. Two mature adults, spending 4 nights in Key West early August. Have booked La Concha and pray it is OK -- love the idea of the anonymity of a hotel, the closeness to the action and the reasonable prices. HOWEVER, am worried. Please re-assure me. Have stayed at a small guesthouse the last trip and want something different and more private this time.

Shall we stay at La Concha?

I%26#39;ve not stayed there, but have been in the hotel%26#39;s facilities (and to The Top for the sunset) and it appears a great hotel. As I recall, the rooms may be a bit smallish, but not a bad thing. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get some in-depth answers, but just to allay any fears, nice hotel.

Be prepared that if you have a car, they charge something like $15-18 a day for parking.

Shall we stay at La Concha?

I had a look at the reviews for this hotel and I was shocked from the outside it has always looked quite classy to me. However I would tend to believe the bad reviews and take heed. If you want good quality motel accomodation with nice pool areas I would choose one of the Southernmost%26#39;s properties then you have three pools to choose from and the rooms are clean. It is big enough to have your requirement of the ';anonymity of a hotel'; but if you wanted to hang out at the Tiki Bar at night it would have a sort of guest house feel. I think you would have the best of both worlds there. You would be a little bit away from the action at the quieter end of Duval but only about 10-15 minutes walk away.

If you can still cancel, I%26#39;d advise you to consider the Best Western Hibiscus or the Southernmost Hotel. Neither is in the heart of the action like La Concha, but La Concha doesn%26#39;t get the kind of reviews the other two places do.

The location is great, and the restaurants downstairs are very nice. I%26#39;d say give it a whirl. I%26#39;ve stayed at some pretty seedy places down there (Budget Key West -YUK!!!!), so it can%26#39;t be as bad as some of the cheaper places.

If the room isn%26#39;t great, you can always drink it better.

There seems to be a surprising # of bad reviews for this hotel..I have never stayed there myself, but just from looking at the reviews it would give me some concern....and its not a budget hotel where you might expect some problems, the rooms here are pretty expensive...so you might want to reconsider your reservations there...just my 2 cents.

My husband and I stayed last year 2 nites at La Te Da, and then went and then spent 2 nites at LaConcha. We loved La Te Da, the staff was attentive and friendly, very romantic room, ours was next to the pool, the picture is on their website, with the white french doors by the pool, the dinning area for breakfast was so relaxing and lovely, it was perfect. excellent breakfast, which was included. Then we went our last two nites, we stayed at La Choncha. I found our room to be very comfortable, great compfy bed, staff was friendly, great rooftop for a nice drink and a perfect key west sunset. We didn%26#39;t eat at all at the hotel, to many other great choices to eat and drink, :). But, the location of this hotel was perfect. I%26#39;ve read bad posts before we went to La Concha, and also was concerned. But, we had free nites. Our room was a standard room, and it was very nice. We both enjoyed our stay, the comfort zone for us, was very good. I think you%26#39;ll be happy. Our experience with La Concha is so different than what Ive read on some posts, but, we were really happy . Were going back to LaTeDa and La Choncha next year. We like being on opposite ends of Duval St. It really was a great 1st choice for us, being our first experience on this friendly island. Your fun on this island begins with the person your with, we had a fantastic time, you will to. Have fun, enjoy it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the location (I don%26#39;t mind being right in the middle of all the action), and if the price were right we%26#39;d definitely give it a try despite all the bad reviews. Trouble is the price is always higher than I%26#39;m willing to pay, especially when I can find a better value elsewhere (condo or bed %26amp; breakfast).

On the subject of reviews...

I%26#39;ve had several out of town friends stay at La Concha and they all either liked or loved it. I%26#39;ve not heard a bad word.

There are several properties here in Key West that I%26#39;ve seen dragged through the mud with bad reviews but when I talk to people I know who have stayed there... Everything was great.

Therefore.... I don%26#39;t read reviews and in fact, would never take them seriously UNLESS they%26#39;re from someone on this forum that I%26#39;ve come to know through thier posts here. I%26#39;ve found the very best reviews within the %26#39;Trip Reports%26#39; that many post here after a visit.

It is far too easy for someone with a grudge (This happened within the past week) to post several bad reviews under different names.

Stay at La Concha and don%26#39;t worry about it. Key west will keep you so busy that your time spent in any room here will likely be very short with the majority of it spent with your eyes closed, sleeping (or working through emergency liver repair in order to go out and do it again.)

We stayed there a few years ago, and we liked it. Granted, we were staying there for a Hotwire price of something like $65, so I can%26#39;t imagine what would make me complain... nevertheless, I thought it was nice. The rooms are on the smallish side, I suppose, but I don%26#39;t get why people need house-sized hotel rooms, anyway.

The parking is outrageous, though... I think $18 a day.

Regarding the reviews... I%26#39;m guessing some folks stayed there during some mega-party week I wasn%26#39;t aware of because of all the times I%26#39;ve been at The Top -- and believe me, we%26#39;ve logged some hours up there -- I have never seen a ';crowd'; at the pool, much less beer cans, cigarette butts, etc. It is really small, but cute, and the area around the pool is quite nice. It is true that the halls don%26#39;t have a/c, as far as I can tell, but if you come to KW and can%26#39;t stand 5 minutes without a/c, you need to go home. Geez, people, the place was built in 1926!
